Every human being at one point or another has told a lie and it doesn’t matter who you are. It is not easy to find a person who doesn’t tell a lie before. Everyone tell a lie, every now and then. However, the frequency with which someone lies will depend on the type of liar they are. Some liers will usually lie more often than others. Some lie with remorse while others have no feelings of guilt when lying. However, some types of people are very skilled when it comes to lying.

These are types of people that can lie to you with a straight face and you will believe everything they say:

  1. NARCISSISTS: They’re liars. Lies are not what they just do. It’s who they’re. In fact, it takes a great deal of strength to walk away when narcissists lied to you because they’re very good at lying. Narcissists have been lying all their lives to both themselves and others. They justifies their lies and it makes valid sense to them. There’s no reason for them to think about the consequences of their lies. Narcissists lies enable them to present false image of themselves to potential target so that this target won’t have the ability to make safe and right decisions. Also, narcissists lie effortless and are very convincing because they lack normal human emotions or inhibitions. They are insensitive and bored, lack the willingness to show empathy for others and feel neither shame nor remorse. This coldness of feeling also allow them to lie with minimal inhibitions. Narcissists can look people straight in the eye while shamelessly lying to them. In doing so, they do not make a face even when confronted with probing questions and evidence of previous deceptions.
  2. PSYCHOPATHS: They’re skilled liars, often spinning elaborate tales which draws in their victims. Psychopaths find it easier to keep track of their lies and spin yet more lies when confronted about the variety of what they had previously said. In addition if they hit a roadblock, lying is one of the tools of manipulations they’ll use comfortably to ensure they get what they wanted. Since psychopaths usually feel little remorse for the lies they tell. It can be very hard to detect wether a psychopath is lying or not. This is what makes it possible for psychopaths to pass lying detections test such as polygraphs.
  3. SOCIOPATHS: They have reputation for being dishonest and deceitful. They often feel comfortable lying to get their own way to get themselves out of trouble. Sociopaths have the tendency to embellish the truth when it suits them. To sociopaths, lying is not wrong but instead is an adaptive behavior and any adaptation that enables survival is a reasonable one. They didn’t see lying as a moral-defunct behavior. They regard it as a necessary means of functioning in the world.

Moreso, it’s common knowledge that manipulative personalities have the tendency to engage in a great deal of lies and deceit. In fact, compulsive lying is associated with narcissists and anti personality disorders — that is likely connected to the lack of empathy and propensity for exploitative behavior inherent in these disorders. Nearly all people lie now and then but when a person is lying on a regular basis, the question may be raised about their psychological state.

FINALLY, liars do not target anyone in particular, it is simply the way they relate to people. Narcissists, sociopaths and psychopaths target people who are useful to them. Lying requires learning to see things from other people views, developing what psychologists call “theory of mind”. Learning to tell an effective lie means getting in to other person’s head in order to tell them what they want to hear.

Lying is a form of communication that involves two parties. The deceiver and the deceived. Lies are told for one or two reasons: either the deceptive person believes they have more to gain from lying than telling the truth; or the deceptive person is incapable of discerning what the truth is, either temporarily or as a result of some permanent defect.
